THALIA Vandenberg is the sort of player every coach wants on their team, particularly in defence.

When plans are going awry, players going down injured and calls going against you, a player who is reliable at all times and doesn't complain is worth her weight in goal.

So it is no surprise Vandenberg took out the Ipswich Flyers' player of the year award at the club's presentation dinner at the weekend.

Vandenberg proved a rock in the Flyers' defence, despite a persistent back injury that hampered her for much of their Schweppes Challenge title-winning season.

Yet whether suffering physical pain or dealing with umpires' calls going against her, Vandenberg never let on.

C[pounds sterling]Her expression doesn't change all game.

So good was Vandenberg at hiding her discomfort, even her coach couldn't tell how badly she was suffering.

C[pounds sterling]In the middle of the season, it was pretty harsh,C[yen] McInally said of the pain her defender endured.

C[pounds sterling]In one game she looked really ginger.

C[pounds sterling]But when I asked her, she said she was alright.C[yen]

It was not for her suffering that Vandenberg received the award however Co it was her consistent performances. …
