SEEING RED

DESPITE her confrontational approach to comedy, Mandy Nolan is keen to help a good cause a promoting the plight of orangutans in Borneo.

aI get asked to support a lot of things,a she said.

aI have a friend who is passionate about orangutans as she has been to Borneo.a

So Ms Nolan has enlisted the help of Sydney-based comedian Tom Gleeson to headline a one-night event, Ranga Comedy a a fundraiser for the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation a tomorrow from 7.30pm at the Currumbin RSL.

aI wanted to find a red-headed comedian and Tom was back from Edinburgh and available,a Ms Nolan said.

Mr Gleeson is always ready to stand up for the rights of the red head and assumed the night was to raise awareness against aranga-isma.

aIt turns out the night is actually to save orangutans which is fine,a he said.

aThey probably get picked on by the other apes, so I'm sure they need our help.a

For tickets to the Currumbin fundraiser, call 0755347999.

Doors open at 6.30pm. Tickets are $29 for club members and $35 for non-members.

ONLY Mandy Nolan would see the funny side of finding her teenage daughter in the lounge room of their home with her boyfriend and herself in a state of undress.

But Ms Nolan, the Northern Rivers' best-known comedian, finds humour in the oddest places.

aI find serious things funny,a she said.

She told the embarrassed boy to tidy himself up, offered him a ham sandwich and filed the incident away for future use in her stand-up comedy show.

Ms Nolan said her children did not seem to mind being the inspiration for her act.

aI once did a gig about one of my kids being picked up for shoplifting, and I said I was upset she hadn't been caught in Country Road,a she said.

aOf course, that's not what I really said to her.a

Nothing is off limits for Ms Nolan, who lives at Mullumbimby but was raised in the Queensland bible belt region of Kingaroy. …
