IT'S an urban myth, according to Warwick's Joe Zhou, that eight-ball is just a pub sport.

In fact, Zhou bristles at suggestions he first picked up the game while down the pub with mates one afternoon.

aThat's a common misconception,a said Zhou, who has been selected in the Queensland team to contest the Australian titles from October 16.

No, Zhou's love affair with eight-ball extends back to his youth in China. But it's only in the last five years that he has been able to pick up a cue.

aI only got the chance to play it when I first started University. I met a friend who had the same interest and started playing,a Zhou said.

Fast forward to 2011 and Zhou has just been crowned the Queensland doubles champion and is in with a chance at booking his spot at the world championships in Blackpool, England.

Zhou will just have to go through Australia's top 128 players to get there.

Despite being his first appearance at the national titles, Zhou is confident he can cause a few upsets and help Queensland bring home the trophy. …
