Princess's Royal Visit; Ann Rickard Steps on Board the Biggest Cruise Ship Ever to Come into Brisbane

Article excerpt

THE majestic Sun Princess had to make her way very carefully up the Brisbane River, but being such a gracious lady it was a minor challenge.

She came gliding along the Brisbane River on a beautiful Wednesday morning last week and sailed into history as the largest ship to be based in Queensland.

As 1900 happy passengers came down the gangway, another 1900 waited to go up. It is quite the scene to watch a port changeover on such a large vessel. With so many passengers and such enormous quantities of supplies being taken on board, an efficient system is essential.

C[pounds sterling]We can have people checked in, boarded and in their staterooms within half an hour,C[yen] commercial director in Australia of Princess Cruises, Stan Birge, said.

C[pounds sterling]Over half our passengers are Cywelcome back' passengers. They return over and over again. Our crew are trained to give personal service so even though passengers are on such a big ship, they feel as though they are welcomed into someone's home.C[yen]

And the ship is big.

At 261 metres long, with a tonnage of 77,441 tonnes, Sun Princess carries 900 crew to look after her 1900 passengers.

The Princess Cruises line is delighted to have Sun Princess home ported in Brisbane, and says it will bring $1 million into the local economy on every turnaround.

C[pounds sterling]Over the next five months we will see 20,000 passengers come and go from Brisbane and that will put $10 million into the local economy over that period, not only in Brisbane but on the Gold and Sunshine coasts as well,C[yen] Mr Birge said.

Good news for Queensland.

Getting lost on board such a big ship will be the only problem passengers might encounter, and even then that would be fun as there is always a crew member nearby to assist.

Sun Princess's 975 staterooms and suites offer accommodation for all budgets, not that anyone would think of spending much time in their rooms. …
