ANIMAL CRUELTY SHAME Pet Neglect Angers Workers at Shelter; 491 Complaints for Year

BUNDABERG people have made 491 complaints of animal cruelty to the RSPCA in the space of a year, shocking new figures reveal.

Bundaberg RSPCA Shelter manager Vicki Beer said the cruelty complaints, lodged in the 12 months to June 2011, had varied from neglect right through to beating an animal.

The figures look even worse when compared to Hervey Bay and Maryborough, which received a little more than 380 calls from the two areas combined about animal cruelty in the same period.

Ms Beer said it was far too common for the shelter to take in animals that had been poorly treated.

C[pounds sterling]One really nice kelpie was only 9kg when she came in,C[yen] she said.

An adult kelpie would usually weigh about 25kg.

That kelpie was lucky and the RSPCA managed to find a loving home for the canine.

Ms Beer said another common form of mistreatment was when owners failed to take their pets to the vet when necessary.
