RUGBY LEAGUE: When Guy Williams sets foot through French Customs control this week, his Australian background will be highlighted by the stocks of Vegemite in his suitcase.

The Comets' C[pounds sterling]Mr ConsistentC[yen] is a self-confessed C[pounds sterling]Vegemite on toastC[yen] man and he sets off from Brisbane on Sunday on his experience of a lifetime after accepting a contract to play football with French club Toulouse.

C[pounds sterling]It actually happened really quickly,C[yen] he said, C[pounds sterling]Chris Beasley was in touch with his coach from Saint-Goudens who is now at Toulouse.

C[pounds sterling]He was asking Chris if he was returning for the Four Nations tournament (with Wales) and asked if he knew any other players interested in playing in France.C[yen]

Williams said he had already been in negotiations with a club in France but those discussions had come to nothing.

C[pounds sterling]They (Toulouse) are wanting someone experienced in their football and a mature attitude,C[yen] he said.

Williams fills that criteria, having played at high levels of the game for nearly a decade and expects to be used not only as a player, but also a mentor.

That might sound a difficult task for an Australian playing in a French-speaking country but Williams said there are five players from English speaking countries and both the coach and club chief executive speak good English.

However, Williams has plans to try and learn the language during his stay along with tasting the cooked delicacies the French are noted for and travelling to other parts of Europe.

C[pounds sterling]It depends on my schedule but I wouldn't mind watching Chris Beasley and Ian Webster playing for Wales,C[yen] Williams said.

All that is incidental as his contract with Toulouse, which is until the end of the season in May should they make the finals, is all about football. …
