MICHAEL Bloyce was a clear winner in the public speaking department at the mayoral business forum on Tuesday night.

But as he well knows, it takes a lot more than the gift of the gab to convert huge promises into political reality.

The brutal fact of council politics is that you need the majority vote of six other people on the council to get anything done.

A long-time council manager, with a background in the arts and events, Mr Bloyce will be quickly labelled a career bureaucrat by his detractors, while his connections with the LNP have already raised the issue of whether we can see party politics coming to local government on the Coast.

Those unhappy with him winning the debate have already suggested the room was stacked with LNP supporters.

A similar accusation was levelled by those unhappy that Lloyd Carey, a quantity surveyor, seemed to have plenty of support from real estate and development interests. …
