PAUL Hilton of Grange Villa , Wallsend, Tyne and Wear, is a keen runner with TyneBridge Harriers. The running club meet at Byker East End pool, Newcastle, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6pm and leave for a run at 6.30pm.

The club has different groups ran by qualified coaches which cater for all abilities.

Phil is a joiner in the construction industry and is married to Jan. They have a daughter Katie who is 14.

Were you ill much as a child? No I was not really ill much. I did suffer from bronchitis from time to time, mainly when I had a cold.

What sports & activities did you take part in at school? I took part in as many sports activities as I could at school. In particular I loved cross country and football. I played at Wallsend Boys Club from age 11 upwards.

Have you ever had a health scare? Yes. My only health scare was about four years ago when I found small pea-size lumps on both my groins. After having tests it was found I had glandular fever. It was a worrying time when I was waiting for the results of the tests.

Have you ever had an operation? I have never had an operation up to now (touch wood!) How often do you exercise and what do you do? I am a runner. I run five to seven days a week. I currently run around 40 to 50 miles per week.

What's the most challenging activity/event you've ever done? I have done lots of challenging running events but probably the 14-mile coastal run from Alnmouth to Beadnell in Northumberland in 2002 was the most challenging. That was as I had not trained properly or got the mileage in training for the race. So I really suffered in that one.

Have you ever done the Great North Run? I have done six Great North Runs. The were in 1982, 1983, 1984, 2002, 2004. This year I aimed to try and beat 2004's time. I did it in 1hr 19min and 20secs, a personal best at the age of 43! …
