CARP FACTS

Three varieties in Australia: European, Koi and Mirror

Are bronze or olive-gold coloured, but Koi carp are brightly coloured.

Are native to central Asia and can live for 17 years

Introduced to Australia as a sport fish in the late 1800s.

Illegal to keep in ponds in most States.

Spawn from September to December and a single female can produce 1.5 million eggs each breeding season.

Environmental damage: muddy water reduces light and oxygen and degrades water quality.

THE only good carp is a dead carp. And the good folk of the Casino RSM Fishing Club did their best on the weekend to help control numbers of the pest.

Now in its third year, the Casino RSM Carp Muster aims to catch as many of the imported pests as possible in the waters that feed the Richmond and Wilson Rivers.
