THERE are many families in the Gympie Region doing it tough like Melissa Mitchell and her three children.

They live in cramped accommodation, a two-bedroom cottage simply not big enough to house the four of them.

Cabin fever has started to set in and Miss Mitchell has been beating a path to Gympie's real estate agencies to find better accommodation, but to no avail.

It appears she is not viewed favourably by landlords because she is a single mum, despite paying $280 a week for unsuitable accommodation.

She welcomed the news that 81 new affordable rental properties would be released over the next couple of years thanks to a State Government initiative aimed at easing the burden caused by a shortage of affordable rental houses.

Minister for Housing Karen Struthers announced 81 new affordable housing allocations for the Gympie regional area, which meant new homes would be built and made available to rent for low-income families. …
