Midsummer Sun Can Shine for Cecil

SIR Henry Cecil has a big weekend in prospect with Frankel, Twice Over and Midday all gunning for glory at Ascot, and Midsummer Sun can keep the Warren Place yard ticking over at Nottingham.

The three-year-old is a halfbrother to Midday and was added to the Derby field at an early stage, but was disappointing when only fifth on his racecourse bow at Newmarket in April. A win at Haydock a month later inspired Cecil to step him up to Group Three company at Royal Ascot but Midsummer Sun found it too big an ask when finishing well down the field in the Tercentenary Stakes.

Given a break to get over that experience, the Monsun colt then dropped back to handicap company at Chester where he scored a convincing win off a mark of 88.

Midsummer Sun was firmly in control that day and his efforts have not escaped the handicapper's notice as he has gone up 6lb, but he is a horse who is evidently still improving and the Denman -Building For You - Handicap looks another good opportunity.

The wildgooseconstruction. Maiden Stakes is another of those late-season runs where trainers scramble to get a win on the board before the end of the campaign.

Mahmood Al Zarooni can hit the target this time with Covert Desire, who struck the bar at Newcastle last time. …
