AN old well has been unearthed at the Roundhouse site in Ocean Shores a a discovery members of the Ocean Shores Community Association (OSCA) hope will stall Byron Shire Council's intentions to develop and sell the land for housing.

The prime piece of real estate in Orana Rd has been excavated in recent weeks, since OSCA was alerted to the existence of the well by a man who helped clear the site in the 1960s.

Bruce Harkness revealed that, as a boy, he had helped demolish the Bower family's Oceanview farmhouse and had dumped demolition material and drums of agricultural chemicals in a nearby well.

The work was to make way for the Roundhouse building, which was finished in 1969.

OSCA maintains the historic value of the well a or the possibility of contamination a should force Byron council to amend its plans for an 11-block subdivision.
