TIME FOR A FRESH LOOK; Final Phase of Work on Town Hall Is under Way

WORK is under way on the final phase to conserve and restore Stockton's historic town hall.

The development is part of Stockton Council's pounds 20m improvement programme for the town centre. TREATMENT: historic Work on the 276-year-old building will include timber preservation and treatment in the clock tower.

Contractors will also redecorate the tower, completing a project to repaint the town hall and nearby Shambles which began during the summer.

The council is also installing an energy-efficient boiler and controls, replacing fire prevention and electrical systems and carrying out other repairs to safeguard the Grade II* listed building for future generations.

Stockton Town Hall is among the oldest in the country still in use for its original purpose. During the work, the building will be closed to the public, with meetings and other events taking place elsewhere until Friday, November 18.

Councillor Mike Smith, Stockton Cabinet member for regeneration and transport, said Stockton Town Hall was at the heart of the town and had been the most prominent building in the centre for hundreds of years. …
