CLOSURES to libraries, leisure centres, community centres, a centre for the deaf, as well as loss of bus subsidies to the elderly cannot be accepted whilst 1.3m every year is still being poured into the mima art gallery.

This sacred cow has to have a drastic reduction in its budget.

The true measure of a council is surely the amount of facilities it can provide to the most vulnerable, and the cuts proposed will hit the young and the old very hard.

Protecting an art gallery whilst accepting these cuts is the measure of a council that has lost its way. Closing the Southlands Centre when it is about to make money for Middlesbrough Council is madness.

This is asset stripping at its worst and cannot be justified.

Some councillors (including ourselves) complained last year when the chief executive was awarded an increase in pay.
