IT says something of the Toon's pulling power when a North American food chain opens its first European venue in the city.

Shark Club gastro bar went into business earlier this month just a stone's throw form the iconic St James' stadium.

With Newcastle United on a winning streak at the moment, this new gastro/sports bar is hoping for similar success.

It shouldn't be a problem, judging from my visit there. It successfully merges the sports bar feel of the venue with a top-notch menu that should appeal to all food types.

It is on the ground floor of the new four-star, 175 room, multimillion-pound Sandman Signature Hotel and prides itself on being the next best thing to being at the game, boasting 40 HD flat screen TVs, a 3D wall screen, large dance floor, private function and VIP rooms and a heated outside terrace.

The Blue Star (this was once part of the Newcastle Breweries complex) is also still very evident, both inside and out - a great homage to times gone by.

We went early evening mid-week and the place was already bustling.

The PR surrounding the opening stated that guests can expect top-notch Canadian-style hospitality, with the venue offering table-side service to both its drinkers and diners - something that sets it apart from other city centre establishments.

In fact, 16 members of staff were flown across from Canada last month to train up the bar's 150 new recruits on their country's world-renowned standard of service.

So does it live up to the hype? Yes. In a way, surprisingly so, as despite it being very modern and hi-tech, when you first enter you do think it is just another sports bar and you expect the same kind of grub akin to that sort of establishment.

The reality could not be further from that expectation.
