THE electorate at the centre of attention for the Queensland election has sent a clear message to candidates: cut out the dirt.

Liberal National Party leader Campbell Newman hopes to win the seat of Ashgrove, in Brisbane's inner west, on his way to becoming premier, but he must topple popular Labor MP Kate Jones.

A public debate in the electorate yesterday followed a disastrous week for Mr Newman.

Secret C[pounds sterling]dirt filesC[yen] on Labor MPs Co gathered by a former Labor staffer engaged by the LNP Co surfaced in the media this week, revealing details of MPs' enmities, family lives, and perceived political strengths and weaknesses.

The dossiers made a mockery of Mr Newman's attempts over four weeks to portray Labor as the dirty party for its dogged pursuit of his family's financial interests.
