A SUNSHINE Coast pilot who survived a plane crash in Papua New Guinea that killed 28 people has suffered leg injuries and is being flown to Port Moresby.

Captain William Spencer, 64, worked in PNG on a three-weeks-on, three-weeks-off basis.

He had been with Airlines PNG for about a year.

When not living and working in PNG, Captain Spencer (pictured) a a father-of-two a lives with his wife and son on the Sunshine Coast.

Captain Spencer's son-in-law, Conal Hanna, said the family had had only limited contact with him.

aWhile I haven't spoken to him I know how distraught he will be at this loss of life,a Mr Hanna said.

aI've seen reports this morning that many of the passengers were on their way to a graduation ceremony.

aCaptain Spencer's own daughter is about to graduate university as a vet and I know how excited he's been about returning home to attend her graduation ceremony later this year.

aI know for sure he will be devastated by this. …
