Kiev Choir to Hit Top Notes at Church

SACRED chants and songs from Eastern Europe will reverberate around a County Durham village church next month.

The Boyan Ensemble from Kiev, Ukraine, is due to perform at St Brandon's Church, Brancepeth, on November 11 at 7.30pm.

To mark the 20th anniversary of the choir's first tour of the UK, and also the same anniversary of Ukraine's independence from the Soviet Union, the choir will perform a special rendition of Many Years, a traditional song normally used in Slavonik countries on special occasions.

Margarete Rolle, the choir's UK representative during the past 20 years, explained: "This is the singers' way of saying thank you to the audiences who have helped to save their choir from extinction by supporting their UK tours for the past two decades.

"This is a rousing song wishing good health and many years of life usually sung to people who are considered important, so we thought it would be a good way of thanking the British audiences who have made this all possible through their support. …
