BATON ROUGE, LA. The Southeastern Conference's new taunting rule saved Florida four points in its 41-11 loss at top-ranked LSU on Saturday.

LSU punter Brad Wing scored on a 52-yard run on a fake punt, but the play was called back to the Florida 23-yard line because officials ruled Wing taunted UF's players by holding his hands out to his side before crossing the goal line.

Wing was penalized 15 yards from the spot at which the officials ruled the taunting occurred.

The taunting rule was one of three implemented for the 2011 season. It made taunting on a scoring play a penalty enforced from the spot instead of being treated as a dead-ball foul and assessed on the PAT or the ensuing kickoff.

Steve Shaw, the SEC's supervisor of officials, said in a statement that the penalty was correct.

"Based on what was seen on the television replays, the LSU player turned towards two Florida players and made a taunting gesture," he said.

"The rule as stated in the rulebook was accurately applied."

It is the first time this season that penalty has been called in the SEC.

MIGHT AS WELL JUMP

The jump pass was back on Saturday - only it was LSU using it and not Florida.

The Tigers called it in the fourth quarter on third-and-goal from the 2-yard line. Quarterback Jordan Jefferson was ready to crash into the line of scrimmage, but pulled up, jumped, and tossed the ball to tight end Mitch Joseph for a touchdown.

LSU coach Les Miles said offensive coordinator Greg Studrawa made the call.

"I thought it was wonderful," LSU coach Les Miles said. " ... It was not necessarily the first time that it was run in football. It has been done with a fullback with a dump pass. Now in the spread, you move out, and it is done with the quarterback carry.

"It was his [Studrawa], and I really enjoyed it."

The first time former UF quarterback Tim Tebow threw the jump pass was against LSU in 2006. …
