Goosen Hails a Team Effort; Cup Win an All-Round Success, Says Triple Try Hero

G REG Goosen paid tribute to the build-up work of his forwards rather than basking in any personal glory, despite becoming the first Newcastle Falcons player in almost four years to score a hat-trick of tries.

The South African full-back crossed for three of Newcastle's five touch-downs in Saturday night's 33-3 LV= Cup triumph over Cardiff Blues, stating: "I was pretty happy, but more just with the fact we put a good win together rather than scoring a hat-trick myself.

"Everybody else had done all the hard work by sucking in the numbers, and it was a good team effort.

"The forwards had an awesome day by drawing in the back-line tacklers and it meant we had two-on-ones to take advantage of."

Ollie Phillips was the last Falcons player to rack up a competitive hat-trick in January 2008, when his four tries helped Newcastle to a 97-0 home drubbing of Spanish minnows Cetransa El Salvador in the Amlin Challenge Cup.

Goosen said: "I scored a few hat-tricks in France with Racing Metro, but this is my first one for Newcastle.

"The result had been a long time coming, and was the culmination of a lot of graft on the training field.

"I know Cardiff sent a young team up, but it was still a good win and hopefully we can build on it."

Looking back on his three scores, the 28-year-old added: "The third was from a rehearsed play - the blind-side move from the scrum - but the others just came from great spontaneous work from the guys when we were going through the phases.

"Jeremy Manning threw a superb pass for one and it was great to have him back in the fold, and then Corne Uys put me in for the other even though he could probably have scored himself.

"He was feeling charitable, but the nice thing about the hat-trick was the fact I just had to apply the finish.

"We knew we would be able to have a go, and the platform was laid by the pack. …
