TWICE as many businesses this year as last year hold the view that being green has a high cost to businesses in the southern Gold Coast.

A Business GC survey indicates 16% of Robina, Varsity Lakes, Burleigh and Coolangatta's businesses C[pounds sterling]strongly agreeC[yen] being green attracts a high cost, compared to 8% last year.

Creek to Creek Chamber president Darren Mackintosh said the carbon price's July 2012 introduction would see a C[pounds sterling]spikeC[yen] in views that sustainability costs businesses more.

C[pounds sterling]More and more businesses are looking for ways to be environmentally sustainable because there's a degree of inevitability about it,C[yen] Mr Mackintosh said.

Environmental certification program GreenBizCheck's Gold Coast consultant Dave Johnston said depending on which measures were used there could be little or no cost, or even a cost reduction and that was before considering the moral issue. Goinggreen could also attract business. …
