Spending a Pretty Penny on Make-Up

Article excerpt

IT has been claimed that women up north wear more make-up than those in the south. SOPHIE BARLEY speaks to Teesside women to see if they really do think that more is more.

A MAKE-UP map of Britain has shown that northern girls like to slap on more make-up than their southern counterparts.

Fake tan, false eyelashes and pink lip gloss are among the most popular beauty products in the North - while it is claimed that women in the South prefer the natural look.

A study into regional beauty buying habits was carried out by Debenhams and it found that on average women in the North buy a new pair of false eyelashes every fortnight.

In the South, women apparently prefer buying tinted moisturisers, concealer and powder.

There was only one exception to the North-South divide - Essex.

Unsurprisingly women in the tan-tastic area, famed for the ITV series The Only Way is Essex, share the attitude of northern girls that more is definitely more.

Joanne Patton, 29, a model from Guisborough, agrees that women in the North wear a large amount of make-up.

She said: "I agree with that. The only place that is the exception is Essex.

"I think heavy foundation is something you see a lot in the North. Sometimes I will be walking through Middlesbrough town centre and girls will have so much foundation on - just to go shopping.

"When girls cake foundation on their faces they will be causing some damage and I don't think it looks very attractive."

"I don't really do that. I wear Bare Minerals which is actually quite good for your skin."

Joanne, who appeared on ITV's Take Me Out, said that fake eyelashes are a "must" for her.

She said: "I swear by my false eyelashes. They are a must. I do go through quite a lot of them as I will only wear them twice before getting some more.

"I think false eyelashes are particularly popular up North. When I go out I see a lot of people wearing them."

Phillippa Harrison, who owns Freckles beauty salon in Linthorpe Road, Middlesbrough, disagrees with the findings and thinks some women on Teesside go for the natural look. …
