SES Demotions a Slap in the Face; Volunteers Disgruntled with Department's Actions

LONG-STANDING Toowoomba State Emergency Service volunteers have been dealt a slap in the face and demoted from their hard-earned positions.

A deputy local controller, who did not want to be named for fear of losing their job, confirmed nine of the Toowoomba unit's deputy local controllers were demoted to the position of group leader at an executive training meeting on Saturday.

The controller said it meant the current group leaders in the Toowoomba unit were also demoted to the position of deputy group leader.

aThey (State Emergency Service management) are appointing a single deputy controller, which will be a paid job,a the controller said.

aWhat peeves me is they appointed the deputy local controllers two years ago.

aTo me it's just a slap in the face.

The move came after the volunteers endured one of their busiest disaster seasons.
