A HUGE redevelopment of the Central Mosque in Middlesbrough has been granted planning consent.

The plan aims to provide a modern mosque and community centre on the site in Southfield Road.

The five storey development would be built in phases.

A major extension would be built on to the existing mosque.

Later the existing mosque - a former Methodist church - will be demolished and the new five-storey structure added to.

Facilities being provided in the development include a multi-purpose hall, funeral room, gymnasium, cafe and reception area, offices, female prayer room, classrooms, male prayer hall, lecture hall, library and imam's room.

There would also be residential accommodation including 14 bedrooms.

When the scheme was first announced in August Wajid Malik, acting imam at the mosque, said one of the aims was to provide much-needed community facilities including a youth club.

He said the plans were ambitious but they were greatly needed. …
