ALAN PARDEW feels that Steve Harper's decision to join Brighton & Hove Albion on loan was an admirable one.

The long-serving Newcastle United stopper teamed up with former Chelsea star Gustavo Poyet at Brighton's plush American Express Community Stadium with Tim Krul established as the Magpies' No 1. He made his debut last night against West Ham - and saw former United team-mate Kevin Nolan score past him in a 1-0 defeat.

United had been rotating both Harper and summer signing Rob Elliot for firstteam bench duty, with the Easington-born keeper an unused substitute against Wigan Athletic.

Discussing Harper's onemonth loan switch to the south coast, Pardew told the Chronicle: "He just wanted to play.

"Not all the top players in the country would have gone on loan - you're vulnerable.

"You're going down a division, but he was prepared to do that, and fair play to him." Pardew has always made his respect for Harper abundantly clear. …
