SLATTS ON FRIDAY

ALL world cups, especially the high-profile ones, no matter how much C[pounds sterling]spinC[yen], will always highlight all the good and bad in the sport. Can't help that Co sports are what they are.

So it was with RWC 2011. There was lottsa good stuff Co Japan v France, Canada v Tonga, Tonga v France, the final, and that's just off the top of the melon.

One of the positives of the RWC was the quality of the tier-two and three teams. And this RWC showed the strength of global rugby.

There is some strength in this rugby code, people. All the teams, all of them, who participated in the event, all 20 of 'em, were populated with players predominately from their C[pounds sterling]homeC[yen] nations Co players who developed their footy playing in strong, legitimate, (national) competitions.

This is not (let's use the three-pass-cross-kick-for-a-try caper as an example) like the NRL teams being thrown up in the air and depending on how the individuals land, repositioning them in different teams and calling it a world cup (that's not a C[pounds sterling]bagC[yen] of league. It's simply used to illustrate strength through comparison).

The RWC also threw up bittsa bad stuff Co any game involving the Poms. Only joking. It's just with the Pommiest of all Poms touring our country, I have the need to lash out at them, in a nice way, that is.

But enough Pommy bashin'. Most of the finals, and one or two of the pool games, were poo.

Sooooo, to the teams. Australia was, well, disappointing. As were the Poms, and you can throw the Irish in there, too. Apart from the game v the French, the Japanese were disappointing. And apart from the final, the French were pretty ordinary also.

And to the people from the land of the long white-sheep shaggers, congrats. The best team in world rugby won Co be proud and rejoice, bro. …
