OLYMPICS chiefs were today accused of hypocrisy after they agreed to pay the central London congestion charge for thousands of official vehicles.

Critics say the decision to pay the [pounds sterling]10 a day charge for visiting dignitaries broke the spirit of the pledge for the "greenest Games ever".

Much of the 4,000 vehicle BMW fleet will be able to enter the zone free of charge after Locog agreed to pick up the bill. For the fleet of 2,000 3-series BMW cars alone the cost will come to more than [pounds sterling]250,000.

The International Olympic Committee insists that all transport for the Games family is free of charge.

The main beneficiaries will be VIPs as the 20,000 media will travel in buses that are exempt from the charge.

Green Party Assembly member Jenny Jones said: "It seems like Locog is going back on all its promises about a greener, car-free Olympics. This is sending the signal that Locog wants all these officials to use their free cars despite the huge pressures there will be on the roads in central London. …
