Veteran Syd Picks Up a Top Honour

SYD ROBSON justifiably stole the show at the Gateshead Council Volunteers Awards Night.

Syd had been nominated by his club Gateshead Harriers for the Sports Achiever category, but not only won this in a public vote, but was deemed the overall winner of the Outstanding Achievement Category. In the latter award Syd was pitted against all the other category award winners from the voluntary and sporting sectors in the Borough.

Now 78 years young, Syd has been coaching for more than 35 years and can claim to have started the likes of Ross Murray, Chris Roberts, Paddy Mulhall, Chris Parr and his father Stephen Parr on the road to international stardom.

Despite suffering two strokes, having a hip replacement and a pacemaker, he still coaches his group of young athletes twice a week and is the young athletes' road and cross-country manager and committee member as well as male entries secretary and turns up in weathers to support his charges with wife Vera by his side. …
