Tree, Wire Stop Car from Dip in Creek; Driver Loses Control of Car at Black Spot

A WEED tree and a single strand of fencing wire appear to have prevented the elderly male driver of this Falcon sedan from landing in Alumy Creek after he ran off the road and crashed yesterday morning.

The crash occurred about 9.30am about 6km north of Grafton on the Lawrence Rd. where the road meets the creek at a set of S-bends.

Nearby resident, Jenny Gray, said she heard a loud crash as the southbound vehicle left the road.

aIt was so loud I thought it was a head-on,a she said.

aI came outside and couldn't see any cars and thought it must be down the creek bank.

aOne wire stopped him from rolling into the creek.a

Ms Gray said the driver had a large bump on his head, but was conscious when she arrived. The man was later taken to hospital.

She said the driver had told her that he had the car on cruise control and hit something on the road.

It appeared the driver was heading south when he lost control. …
