MOST visitors head for York's historic centre, but the city's southern outskirts hold any number of contrasting features.

Starting from Skeldergate Bridge we join the riverside pathway through St George's Field (with the Ouse on our right) and soon pass the Foss Barrier on our left hand side.

After crossing Blue Bridge we turn right to pass Marlborough Villa and New Walk Terrace before spotting the Pikeing Well close at hand on our left hand side.

We soon pass the Millennium Bridge and leave New Walk to continue ahead along Love Lane.

At the split in paths we bear to the right (and not ahead to Broadway) with St Oswald's Church on our left hand side.

We soon reach a crossroads of routes and continue ahead towards Fulford Ings.

At the next junction of routes again we walk ahead and as the trackway then bends to the right we keep ahead to a metal field gate on the left.

Bearing to the left between wooden posts our route runs up the slope past a property on the left and between hedges to another junction of routes.

Continuing ahead between hedges on Medds Lane we soon reach the junction with Fulford Road.

At this point we turn left and soon pass York Pavilion and then the Saddle Inn and Fulford Methodist Church before turning right into Heslington Lane.

We soon pass School Lane and St Oswald's C of E School on our right before following the gentle left hand curve round to the junction with Broadway.

Keeping to the right we continue into Heslington Lane as far as a metal kissing gate on our left where we walk across the open grassland of Walmgate Stray.

Continuing ahead we cross three wooden footbridges with the buildings of York University prominent on our right.

After the third footbridge we bear left to join a metalled lane with a stone wall close on the right.

Passing horse chestnut trees (on the right) and allotments (left) our route runs up the slope with views of the Rowntree's factory building ahead in the distance. …
