STEVEN TAYLOR has revealed he remains optimistic about the chance to pull on an England jersey - despite being left out of the Three Lions squad to face Spain and Sweden.

England assistant manager Stuart Pearce has been a regular at Newcastle United games this season, but the 25-year-old Toon defender's heroics have not been enough to earn him a place in the squad.

Taylor is ranked within the top 15 performers overall in the Premier League in the EA Sports Player Performance Index with only England captain John Terry ahead of him when it comes to English defenders.

Taylor also features at fourth spot in the overall defenders chart, but this wasn't enough to convince Fabio Capello of a place in his experimental squad for the friendlies with the world and European champions and the Swedes. When asked about his international future, Taylor told the Chronicle: "You never know.
