DO YOU have the plant that ate Georgia?

A half-day workshop to help landholders identify and manage vine weeds on their property will be held in Bellingen on Saturday, November 12.

Vines are a characteristic of the subtropical climate of the Bellinger and Kalang valleys and contribute to the lushness of the area's vegetation.

Many of these vines are native plants, but a number are some of our most serious weeds that can smother and destroy large canopy trees and other vegetation. They are a real threat to local bush.

Vine weeds in focus are cat's claw creeper and madeira vine (both being considered for listing as Weeds of National Significance), balloon vine and kudzu a the plant renowned for taking over huge areas of native vegetation in the US state of Georgia.

While cat's claw is still only found in isolated locations in the Bellinger Valley, it has huge potential to destroy native forest remnants and is a real problem in areas to our north. …
