THE Australian Sugar Cane Railway could be out of action for weeks as volunteers wait to hear the verdict from Queensland Transport auditors.

The two auditors finished inspecting the train operations late on Wednesday afternoon after they were called in by the Department of Transport and Main Roads, who shut down the popular tourist attraction almost two weeks ago.

The closure is costing the railway, which only operates every Sunday, hundreds of dollars each week.

Australian Sugar Cane Railway Association secretary Ross Driver said the money raised each week was used to complete maintenance and to keep the train running.

aWhen we operate we usually make around the $500 mark,a he said.

Mr Driver said the auditors seemed aimpresseda with what they saw, but a final verdict would not be handed down for some time.

aWe have about four levels the report has to go through before we can get accreditation,a Mr Driver said.

He said the association had been told they had to provide a asmalla amount of additional paperwork to the department for accreditation to be considered. …
