TYNESIDE-based Ethiopian athlete Yared Hagos is finding the North East air to his liking after smashing another course record last weekend.

Since moving to Newcastle, the 30-year-old has produced eye-catching performances - culminating with victory in the Derwentwater 10-mile in Keswick, where he shaved 10 seconds off the 1986 record of 49min 15sec set by legendary Cumbrian Kenny Stuart.

His record-breaking run turned out to be an excellent pay day for the African, for not only did he pick up the winner''s award of pounds 200 he also received another cheque for pounds 200 for setting a new course record!

Hagos, who finished eighth in the Great North Run in September, has won every other race since moving from Yorkshire around six months ago and is now targeting another 10-mile contest in nine days' time when he lines up in Border Harriers' Brampton to Carlisle event.

The African, who seems to have a permanent grin on his face, has made many friends in the North East and is eager to repay that friendship by turning out in as many local events as possible. …
