Diving into Creativity; Just like Her Paintings, 77-Year-Old Giovanna Cattoi Has Lived an Extremely Colourful Life, Writes Anna Jones

Article excerpt

GIOVANNA Cattoi's bright paintings of the colourful and mystical creatures that lurk beneath the surface capture a place most of us would never dare enter.

She illustrates them for those of us who are not brave enough to join her underwater.

This inspiration led Giovanna to combine two of her greatest passions and bring a new edge to her artwork.

The creative and mostly unheard of technique has allowed her to dive and depict underwater life in Cooktown, Port Douglas, Townsville and Cairns, and spurred a lifelong love.

C[pounds sterling]I have been diving all of my life, since I was 14.

C[pounds sterling]I fell in love with the Great Barrier Reef, and drawing it.

When underwater, Giovanna records everything that she sees Co the colours, the shapes, the type of fish Co and then once on land, she sketches these images before painting them in oil paints. …
