A BIG week of game fishing is coming up for the Coffs Coast, with both the Hot Current tournament and the Solitary Islands Game Fishing Club's competition over the weekend.

As if it was planned, there's a huge pool of very warm 25C East Australian current water running down the Coffs Coast. This is the sort of warmwater pulse that always brings a big mob of blue marlin to the ocean off Coffs, the possibility of rare short-billed spearfish and hopefully, the first black marlin of the season.

Coffs Coast skipper Pete Mallia had his boat up off the Tweed recently and tagged a very nice 130kg black marlin there, so the blacks that usually spend the summer months off our coast are apparently perfectly positioned to ride this latest pulse of warm water into town right on schedule today.

Meanwhile, blue marlin have been around for more than a month. These fish really are the Mad Max of the big game world a they hit like a locomotive, run hard, and only give up grudgingly after an hour or two when the angler is starting to seriously wonder what he or she did to deserve the punishment. …
