MORE than 200 GPs earned more than pounds 250,000 a year from NHS and private work in 2009/10 - down on the previous year.

Data from the NHS Information Centre for contractor GPs in the UK showed average earnings have remained static in recent years.

The average income before tax was pounds 105,700 in 2009/10, compared to pounds 105,300 in 2008/09 and pounds 106,100 in 2007/08.

This is down from a peak of pounds 110,000 in 2005/06.

The figures also showed that 210 GPs had an income before tax of at least pounds 250,000 compared to 250 GPs the year before.

Some 680 GPs had an income of pounds 200,000 to pounds 250,000, compared to 700 the year before.

Almost one in 10 GPs earned pounds 150,000 to pounds 200,000 and 13,180 earned pounds 100,000 to pounds 150,000, both similar to the previous year. …
