TEESSIDE team Velo29 are hoping to take North-east cycling to another level next season after finishing their campaign with 35 senior wins.

A targeted top 10 place in a National Premier Calendar race eluded them after entering every race in the prestige series last term. But they consistently had riders inside the top 30 of the elite events and swept up elsewhere on the regional and national scene, bettering their main North-east amateur rivals, Blackhawk Bikes, in the process.

Now the challenge is to improve on that in 2012, and it's one which the team - founded in August, 2009 by Dan Smith and Richard Williamson - are confident of achieving.

Velo29 won the red jersey for the best young rider at the Tour of Morocco, and other highlights included second place for Rob Carter in the North-east Division Road Race Championship and Richard Meadows winning the national 8km grass track title.

They have already strengthened for next season, snapping up Tranmire youngster Alex Bottomley, who was third in the National Junior Road Race Championship and a highly rated prospect. …
