Summer Starts on High Note; Town Abuzz and Chamber Reports an Increase of 10-15% in Retail Trade

AFTER a year in the doldrums,optimism is returning to the region's retailers with the first signs of what many hope will be abumper summer season.

The Reserve Bank's recent interest rate cut, Christmas spending, local marketing campaigns and the first influx of tourists for the summer season are combining to give traders a much-needed boost.

In Byron Bay the local chamber of commerce is reporting an increase of 10-15% in trade for many businesses in the lead-up to the festive season.

President Paul Waters said the town had been abuzzinga withvisitors in recent weeks.

Accommodation and hospitality were the big winners, but retailers were also among those reaping the rewards.

aPeople stay for a week, they're dining out every day and shopping every day,a Mr Waters said.

It's a welcome turn-around for Byron Bay traders who have suffered through an unusually quiet winter thanks to the loss of Splendour in the Grass, the Queensland floods and a national slump in retailing. …
