LAND Rover''s Freelander 2 looks the business - but the real star turn is hidden under the bonnet. The 2.2-litre diesel in the four-wheel drive SD4 HSE would put Arnold Schwarzenegger in the shade while it''s pulling power would give Cameron Diaz a run for her money.

It is linked to a smooth automatic gearbox providing a potent combination that cannot fail to bring a smile to your face when behind the wheel.

There are two versions of the turbodiesel available - with the more powerful version I tried being the one to go for.

Recently upgraded by Land Rover, both engines are quieter and more efficient with increased levels of mid-range torque which will be popular for those who enjoy towing their holiday home behind them.

Carbon dioxide emissions have been significantly reduced and fuel economy improved.

Levels of performance haven''t been compromised however as the SD4 accelerates from rest to 60mph in just 8.7 seconds on its way to an improved top speed of 118mph.

The exterior does the improved engine justice with a new front bumper assembly incorporating a revised front grille finish, improved headlights and tail lamps while the eye is caught by large good-looking alloy wheels.

Step inside the cabin and the efforts of Land Rover''s design team become evident as smart instrument dials, comfortable heated seats with powered adjustment, and a quality fit and finish all make a good impression. Having taken the Freelander on virtually every type of road there is, incorporating a few scheduled off-road sojourns necessary for school football and rugby matches, I can vouch for the Freelander 2''s ride which is excellent.

As well as smoothing out the many imperfections that litter our roads it cruises up and down the motorway effortlessly leaving driver and passengers in great shape after even the longest of journeys. …
