NEWCASTLE was glowing as the city's Christmas illuminations came to life in a blaze of colour. Pop star Joe McElderry tripped the switch on Grey Street to transform the dark night with thousands of dazzling bulbs. Hundreds of fans gathered in the city centre to welcome the South Shields singer as he belted out a rendition of Wham's Last Christmas. Joe was joined by very special guests from the Teenage Cancer Trust. Thirteen-year-old Carl Robinson, who was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma in May this year, took to the stage as the button was pressed. Carl's family, of Blyth received the invitation last week and his mum Lynn said she was overwhelmed. Lynn, 39, said: "He was so excited and it has really lifted his spirits. He had seen Joe on the X Factor, so he knew who he was."

In May, Lynn and her husband Michael were left devastated when Carl, who is also autistic, was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma after doctors noticed a change in his neck and carried out a biopsy. …
