Sixth Fire Victim Dies in Hospital

THE fire at the nursing home at Quakers Hill in north-western Sydney has claimed its sixth victim as NSW Premier Barry O'Farrell ordered an urgent review of staff screening processes.

Police confirmed that a 79-year-old woman died at 9.30am yesterday in Liverpool Hospital two days after fire tore through the nursing home.

A registered nurse who worked at the home, 35-year-old Roger Dean, is suspected of starting the fire and on Saturday was charged with four counts of murder.

Mr O'Farrell described the fire as C[pounds sterling]a terrible tragedyC[yen].

He said he has ordered that a report on police checks for nursing home staff and nursing home building structures be given to him.

C[pounds sterling]I've asked for a full report not only on checks on staff, but also the physical structure of nursing homes and retirement villages across the state,C[yen] Mr O'Farrell said.
