COUNTRY Labor candidate Peter Ellem remains optimistic after recording the fifth-highest by-election swing since the Sec-ond World War in gaining 34.9% of the two-party-preferred vote in Saturday's Clarence by-election.

Yesterday Mr Ellem said it was always going to be a tough by-election to contest in a historically strong Nationals seat.

aI would like to thank the people of the Clarence for their support at the ballot box and during the by-election campaign,a Mr Ellem said.

aIt was a great experience to move across the communities of the electorate and listen to their concerns and take those issues forward in an issues-based campaign.a

With NSW Opposition Leader John Robertson by his side, Mr Ellem said he watched the results of the by-election come in before calling Chris Gulaptis just after 9pm to congratulate him on his victory. Mr Ellem said the swing against the Nationals sent a clear message to the O'Farrell Government to stop their aggressive industrial relations campaign. …
