A CHILL will have run down the spines of all parents who read about the near-drowning of a small boy at the Hervey Bay Aquatic Centre.

Urangan State School principal Damien Gainsford got it right yesterday when he told the Chronicle that the child had got a second chance. It was a miracle that he did.

After chatting to eyewitnesses, a number of images were graven on my mind. Partly due to the elemental shock that charged the accounts of what these people had seen.

One is of his tiny body, limp and wet, and a face turned blue by lack of oxygen.

Another is of the arrival of the mother, stricken with fear.

A third is the frantic attempts to revive him and the self-doubt that must have afflicted the brave non-professionals who took on such responsibilities.

Last is the profoundly disturbing image of kids and assorted stickybeaks crowding around to try to see what was going on.

Who was there to supervise the crush, which persisted until Mr Gainsford requested lifeguards to create a perimeter? …
