Mariners Shape as Top Threat to Roar

LAST season's losing A-League grand finalists Central Coast are mounting the case that they remain the greatest challengers to Brisbane Roar's supremacy.

The Mariners overtook Sydney FC to climb into second place behind runaway leaders Brisbane with an entertaining 3-2 win over the Sky Blues at Sydney Football Stadium on Saturday night.

Sydney, who have come from behind to produce results three times this season, again fought hard late, Socceroos veteran Brett Emerton scoring from a perfect free kick in the 88th minute to halve a two-goal deficit.

But Mariners coach Graham Arnold said a one-goal winning margin was the least Central Coast deserved.

The Mariners have won three of their past four games.
