I WOULD like to support the call by Inez Penrose (FCC November 19) for council to keep the Arkarra Tea Gardens in public ownership for the following reasons:

Extended out of town visits: Visitors to the Fraser Coast need to be offered alternative activities to whale watching and Fraser Island to encourage them to extend their stay in the area.

Local visitation: Visitation to the Arkarra Wetlands has sharply declined with the non-operation of the Arkarra Tea Gardens.

It was a very popular area for residents of Hervey Bay to take visitors for a pleasant afternoon.

Provision of toilets: Without the tea gardens, Council will need to consider the provision of toilets for visitors to the wetlands, which would often include children and elderly people. This would be quite expensive.

Environmental education centre, a tourist drawcard: Conversion of the tea gardens to an environmental education centre combined with a cafe will enhance the tourism drawcard status of the Wetlands. …
