Synners Fired Up on the Vase Trail; Non-League Football

BILLINGHAM Synthonia marched into today's FA Vase third round draw after a gritty 2-0 win over Crook.

But top flight Teesside neighbours Billingham Town and Norton both crashed out of the minnows' national knockout.

Synthonia - who reached the fifth round last year - took their time to get started as second division Crook set the early pace. Devine had one scooped off the line and Synners' keeper Josh Moody made a superb save from a point-blank header in a torrid first 45 minutes.

But Synners perked up after the break and after a couple of good early efforts went ahead on 55 minutes as Danny Wray crossed in for a Chay Liddle header.

Crook hit back looking for a leveller and Synners were again under the cosh but they broke out to seal it in the last minute, a quick ball forward sending Earl down the right to round the keeper.

Elsewhere Norton were narrowly squeezed out 1-0 away at fellow NL top flight side Ashington.

After a cagey first half Ashington took the lead straight from the restart as a good ball from Taylor teed up Godsmark to rifle home.

The Ancients almost got a leveller late on as new boy John Alexander fired against the post.

And Billingham Town went down 4-2 at home to Derbyshire side Glossop North End.

They shot themselves in the foot as a defensive mix-up let Hinds steal in to give the visitors an early lead then Hamilton was allowed a free header to make it two.

Town clawed back into the game on 65 minutes as Jamie Owens poked home in a scramble, then levelled soon after as Micky Dunwell lobbed over the advancing keeper.

Town pressed for a winner but got caught out on 85 minutes as keeper James Briggs saved a shot but the rebound bounced in off the back of team-mate Arthur.

Then as Town piled forward at the death they left space at the back for Elliott to race clear and seal it. …
