WELCOME once more to The Journal's Go Green supplement. Times are currently tough for the North East's green businesses, with Government plans to slash solar power subsidies threatening to do a lot of damage to some of the region's most recently successful businesses.

And with such issues on the horizon you could be forgiven for thinking everything is doom and gloom.

But over the following pages you will find that even with the outlook so bleak our local councils, charities and businesses are still finding reasons to be cheerful.

Newcastle City Council for example, despite the setback of the announcement by energy and climate change minister Greg Barker, are showing their confidence in Tyneside by pressing ahead with their bid to become Europe's green capital.

While businesses such as GAP Transport are leading the way in helping other businesses to reuse and recycle.

From the small ideas to the big international gestures it just goes to show how much is going on in the green sphere - even when conventional greenery could well be buried deep beneath a covering of snow. …
