Murray Ready to Quit as Berdych Battles Demons

[bar] NDY MURRAY was today agonising over whether to pull out of the ATP World Tour Finals due to a groin injury but his next scheduled opponent was also beset by problems.

Thomas Berdych was a point away from inflicting only a fifth defeat of the season on world No1 Novak Djokovic at London's O2 last night only to suffer a painful 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 defeat.

The result leaves the Czech almost certainly needing to beat Murray to have a chance of qualifying for the semi-finals.

Berdych has defeated the Briton in their last three meetings, including at the Paris Masters earlier this month, and the unique format of this tournament, in which a player can lose a match and still ultimately qualify for the semi-finals, means he's still in the running.

But so down in the dumps was the 26-year-old after blowing his chance last night that he is won't be confident of beating even an ailing Murray.

Berdych said: "I don't know what I can take positive from the game. I'm feeling really disappointed and that's it. I just need to get through this feeling. The first thing is to forget my result quickly and be ready for tomorrow."

Murray pulled his groin in training last week but was determined to take to court in front of his home crowd, however his discomfort was clear as he went down 6-4, 7-5 to Spain's David Ferrer.

The world No3 was due to make an announcement today and should the 24-year-old be unable to compete, world No9, Janko Tipsarevic will take his place in the competition.

"It would be gutting, yeah, really gutting," said Murray. "If it wasn't Slams or this event, I wouldn't have played.

"The last two years, I've won two matches in the group and one year I went through and one year I didn't.

"I think even sometimes you can go through only winning one match. …
