Taylor Got Led Astray by Alcohol, Fenech Says

BOXING: Australian boxing legend Jeff Fenech has lamented the evil influence of drugs and alcohol on his old friend and charge Shannan Taylor, who was seriously ill and fighting for his life yesterday.

A hospital spokesperson in Wollongong confirmed yesterday Taylor, 39, was in a critical condition.

Taylor (pictured) admitted to having a drug problem early last decade but got his career back on track after three devastating losses in 2001. Taylor (52-10-3, 37 KOs) won middleweight and super middleweight world titles belonging to the little recognised WBF.

Fenech, who was in Taylor's corner for his biggest fight, against Shane Mosley in 2001, said he took a call from Taylor about 6.30pm on Sunday.
